Researcher Accused WhatsApp Of Keeping ‘Deleted’ ChatsPrivacy Facebook-owned messaging service WhatsApp have been called into question by researchers who have discovered that the app routinely keep chats even after they have been deleted.

This was discovered by Jonathan Zdziarski, iOS researcher, he found that chat logs remain exist on disc unless overwritten, meaning that anyone with physical entry to the device could potentially recover the data or access it via a reserved back-up system.

Jonathan Zdziarski assign this opening to a failure to automatically overwrite data by default, undermining recent efforts by the messaging service to smooth its privacy credentials by enhancing its coding procedures to provide additional protection to data in movement.

The report come at a politically sensitive time for WhatsApp which has come under pressure in Brazil to hand over chat logs to prosecutors in an ongoing corrupt case.
